A large number of synthetic growth-regulating chemicals are now being manufactured, and they are finding wide application in both retarding and stimulating growth. Although we have discovered chemicals which affect growth, like indoleacetic acid and gibberellic acid, we still have to answer the questions of why and how. How do growth-regulating substances affect the various metabolic processes? Why do some plants grow taller in response to gibberellic acid, for instance?
